The Vallejo CLT initiative empowers Vallejo's community to establish and oversee permanently affordable housing through a Community Land Trust (CLT). As a pilot program, it underscores the urgency of community-driven affordable housing solutions with a vision of an inclusive housing landscape that values the diverse needs and cultures of Vallejo's residents, advocating for housing justice for all.

Vallejo CLT

Partners

The Vallejo CLT project is a collaborative effort between NCLT, the Bay Area Regional Health Inequities Initiative (BARHII) and Urban Habitat. Together, we provide technical assistance to the Vallejo Housing Justice Coalition (VHJC) in establishing a Community Land Trust (CLT) in Vallejo.

Task

The project's primary goal is to empower the Vallejo community to create and manage permanently affordable housing through a CLT. This initiative serves as a pilot program, demonstrating the urgency of community-driven and community-controlled affordable housing development.

Vision

VHJC envisions an affordable housing landscape that respects the diverse needs and cultures of Vallejo's community. They champion housing justice for all, regardless of race, culture, age, or sexual orientation.

Key Initiatives

  • Community Training: Offering CLT 101 training, community education, and leadership development to the VHJC and local residents.

  • Site Identification: Collaborating with community organizing groups to identify sites for acquiring and rehabilitating affordable housing units, conducting feasibility studies, and exploring subsidy funding options.

  • Scaling Up: Developing a long-term scale mechanism and business model based on community feedback, Vallejo market analysis, and funding research.

  • Acquisition and Development: Acquiring selected sites for resident and community-controlled housing. In cases requiring more than minimal rehab, the project also involves design development and entitlements.

The project's aim includes piloting at least three initial sites within the coming year. The mix of project types includes direct acquisition of multi-family conversions for cooperative-style resident management and the conversion/development of single-family homes to create mixed-generation co-housing communities in collaboration with POC elders and Vallejo homeowners.
