In January 2023, Homeless Action Center introduced Almost Home, a program within Haste Street House. Almost Home offers temporary, supportive housing to seven disabled and previously unhoused residents, assisting them in obtaining Supplemental Security Income benefits and eventually permanent housing. Residents receive support in income, healthcare, housing navigation, and transportation to appointments. The program also hosts on-site enrichment activities like movies and art talks.

Almost Home is part of Homeless Action Center's initiative to stabilize clients as they await SSI case resolution and permanent housing. This program simplifies the process of reaching clients for attorneys working on their cases.

Haste Street House has a longstanding tradition of offering transitional housing for individuals with incomes at or below 30% of the Area Median Income (AMI) through master leases. Prior to its recent master lease with the Homeless Action Center, this property had been leased to Options Recovery and, even earlier, to Jobs Consortium.

The property location is convenient, situated one block from downtown Berkeley, close to UC Berkeley campus, Telegraph Avenue shopping and restaurants, and public transportation. It's also less than a mile from People’s Park historic landmark, as well as the Berkeley Bowl Marketplace, renowned for its extensive produce selection. Despite its central location, the property offers a tranquil environment, shielded from heavy traffic, ensuring a peaceful living space for its residents.

How To Apply

Almost Home residents are referred through Alameda County and must meet specific eligibility criteria. For more information about placement, please contact Homeless Action Center.
