Coop 789
789 61st Street, Oakland, CA 94609
“Four renters in North Oakland feared displacement when their landlord painted their building ‘gentrifier gray’ and put it on the market. They turned to the East Bay Permanent Real Estate Cooperative and the Northern California Land Trust, which helped buy the fourplex by securing a $600,000 loan from the city of Oakland, through a local bond measure earmarked for land trusts and cooperatives to create ‘permanent affordability.’”

The group is currently in the process of co-operatizing their living situation by acquiring the buildings and landscaping from NCLT. To ensure successful co-stewardship, they will actively participate in educational initiatives and meetings.
Mission & Vision Statement: Coop 789 is a group of queer, indigenous, people of color, and/or allies who organized together to buy and co-steward a building in North Oakland. Coop 789 centers the BIQTPOC community in Oakland who have continued to live here since the latest wave of extreme gentrification.
As the pilot project of EB PREC, Coop 789 will act as a proof of concept that cooperative stewardship of land can actually bring people together to meet their basic needs (affordable housing) while politically educating each other in the hopes of making it easier for others when they start their journey in the future.
To achieve these goals, Coop 789 is committed to organizing various enjoyable events, including backyard karaoke parties, permaculture workshops, and bake sales. These activities serve as not only sources of fundraising but also opportunities to bring the BIQTPOC community together. The raised funds will be utilized to assist other individuals in Oakland who aspire to purchase and co-steward their own homes.
