California CLT Network

The Northern California Land Trust (NCLT) was instrumental in forming the California Community Land Trust Network (CACLTN) two decades ago. Today, CACLTN, representing 26 CLTs, continues to advance affordable housing in California through resource sharing, advocacy, education, and support services, transforming the landscape of community ownership and housing justice.

CACLTN

The Northern California Land Trust (NCLT) was instrumental in the formation of the California Community Land Trust Network (CACLTN) nearly 20 years ago. NCLT, alongside representatives from Housing Land Trust of Sonoma, Burlington Associates, and Goldfarb and Lipman, initiated discussions in 2005 for a statewide Community Land Trust (CLT) network.

This collaborative effort culminated in a foundational gathering of approximately 25 individuals from 6 California CLTs and 6 supporting organizations offering legal, strategic, and financial services. Held at the Marconi Conference Center in Marshall, California, this meeting aimed to unite California CLT members, identify common challenges, and strategize solutions. Several key goals emerged, including sharing legal and technical resources, collaborating on fundraising strategies, standardizing statewide ground lease and CC&R document guidelines, enhancing advocacy efforts, and exploring the role of CLTs in broader social change initiatives.

Two decades later, the CACLTN has evolved into a robust network including membership from over 26 CLT organizations across California as of 2021. It has become an essential resource, providing information, education, and support to CLTs, facilitating capacity building, advocating for impactful policies, organizing public workshops, and developing assistance programs. Notably, in 2021, CACLTN hired an Executive Director and has since expanded its team, marking significant milestones along with its first statewide funding initiative.

NCLT's role in the collaborative creation of CACLTN has had a profound impact on affordable housing in California. The power of individuals coming together to share resources and create positive change is evident in the network's accomplishments. As a result of their collective efforts, the landscape of community ownership and housing justice in California has been transformed, with a promising future of continued growth and impact.
